A SOUTH PRELIM: #12-CHEVERUS VS. #5-SOUTH PORTLAND

Fifth-seeded South Portland took a two-goal halftime lead and held on for a 3-2 victory over No. 12 Cheverus in a Class A South preliminary round playoff contest Saturday.
The Red Riots (11-4) advance to face No. 4 Gorham in the quarterfinals at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Curtis Metcalf gave South Portland an early lead, after a pass from Jayden Kim, but Collin Plalum’s header off a throw-in from Carter Hoglund tied the score.
The Red Riots then got back-to-back goals. Joey Hanlon broke the tie with an assist from Casey Corcoran, then set up Griffin Tetzlaff with just over a minute left in the first half.
Hoglund answered for the Stags (5-7-3) with about 15 minutes remaining.
Thomas Caouette stopped four saves for South Portland. Cheverus keeper Gustavo Cedillo made five saves.
